Apprentice training centre opens in Brisbane

SkillsTech Australia opened the new Heavy Vehicle and Diesel Fitting Training Facility at Acacia Ridge, south of Brisbane, last week.
Jointly funded under a $12.9 million arrangement between the Queensland and federal governments, the new facility is built on the site of the former GMH vehicle assembly plant that closed in 1984.
The purpose-built facility provides workshop areas and laboratories equipped with the latest technology to deliver pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, traineeship and post-trade training for the road transport, mining, gas and construction maintenance industries.
SkillsTech also receives support from the heavy vehicle industry, with the supply of various components including engines, transmissions and even complete trucks for student training.
“Today, there are approximately 900 heavy commercial vehicle and diesel fitting students at SkillsTech Australia and it is expected that this number will grow significantly over the next five years,” SkillsTech Australia Institute Director Mary Campbell says.
“This is a world-class facility that will deliver world-class training to Queenslanders at the highest of industry standards with the latest sustainable technologies.”
